Resurgence of bold messaging

Nice little bit of graphics/messaging around at the moment. Liked this piece and came across a nice site called webwithoutsense over the weekend too, which I'll post up some screen grabs from in the next few days.

The Art Of Lost Words at London’s German Gymnasium

Text/gallery is a new experimental showcase for art and design projects inspired by the printed and written word. The brainchild of curator Rebecca Pohancenik of Studio Zwei, text/gallery has opened its first exhibition entitled The Art Of Lost Words this week at London’s German Gymnasium which promises to showcase “new design and illustration inspired by language’s forgotten words”.

The exhibition’s 41 participants have produced a piece of work based on a seldom used word he or she has selected from the English dictionary. Here is one that I really like from a quirky design agency called No Days off:

No Days Off created this piece in response to the word “jussulent” - an adjective meaning having a soupy consistency: full of broth

The Art Of Lost Words runs until 9 March at The German Gymnasium, Pancras Road, London NW1 (opposite St Pancras International station). Open daily 10.00–18.00. Admission free.

The works are available to buy online at textgallery.info, with proceeds going towards the National Literacy Trust.

Your First Album Cover in 4 Easy Steps

A friend sent me this today, and it's a great exercise, and brilliant fun too. Have a go following the 4 steps outlined below:

1 - Go to "wikipedia." Hit “random”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to "Random quotations"
or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

Note: you can't always pull pics off flickr (some people have their photos locked and you'll get a spaceball.gif). In this case, just refresh and go for the third pic of the refreshed screen.

4 - Use Photoshop (or similar) to put it all together.

5 - Post it to Facebook as a note and tag the friends you want to join in (inc. me, 'cause I wanna see yours too...)

Some nice typography from Argentina

Came across some nice typo examples in the weekend. You know when you find a site with some links that lead to other cool sites, which lead to more cool sites, which ultimately leads to a database of great designers profile pieces...

This piece is by Andres Cambiasso from Argentina, and shows some surprising skill in balance and composition. Not sure what the piece was designed for, but I liked it, so stuck it up. Loads of great work on the site (and some pretty average stuff too), but you get that.

Check the site if type & design are your bag. The designers profile list runs down the left hand side. There must be over 100 designers profiled, so it'll take you a while to get thru them all - or you can be smart (like me) and do it in installments:
